Cavity Walls and Inflated Insulation

Portuguese Building Tradition Meets Modern Energy Efficiency

In many Portuguese houses built starting in the 1960s - and even earlier, in some regions - the walls are not massive, but of double layer, known as double walls or Hollow walls.
These walls were initially designed to combat the humidity of Portugal's humid Atlantic climate. Over time, they became an essential element in the country's architectural evolution.

But here's the problem: Millions of these walls are still uninsulated, with only a thin layer of air between the blocks.
Essa air cavity? It's a valuable opportunity - and with EnergyEase inflated insulation, can transform it into a true source of energy savings.

🏗️ A Brief History of Double Walls in Portugal

Double walls began to appear in Portuguese construction in the 1930s, especially in coastal cities such as Porto, Lisbon and Coimbra, where rain and humidity often caused massive walls to seep into.
Inspired by Northern European techniques, the builders went on to separate the outer wall from the inside with a narrow air cavity, to block moisture from entering habitable areas.

Between the 1950s and 1980s, this method became common in residential areas, especially in multifamily buildings and villas.
The walls were generally composed of perforated bricks outside and concrete blocks or hollow bricks in the interior, separated by an air chamber of 5 to 8 cm.

Initially, no insulation was installed - it was believed that “still” air was sufficient.
However, over time, it has been proven that It was insufficient.
Since the 90s, Portuguese legislation began to require thermal insulation in new buildings. Still, millions of houses before that date are still empty.

That's where we come in.
