What Is an Energy Certificate?

An Energy Certificate is an official document that rates a home’s energy performance on a scale from A+ (most efficient) to F (least efficient). It includes:

• Information on heat loss, insulation, windows, and HVAC systems
• Recommendations to improve efficiency
• Valid for 10 years

It’s required by law when you sell, rent, or renovate your home.

What usually changes the rating

The energy rating depends on the whole home: walls, roof, windows, heating and hot water. Insulating cavity walls and the attic improves the building envelope; how far the rating rises, only the new certificate will tell.
